BitMind Launches Subnet in Bittensor to Combat the Growing Threat of Deepfakes

August 5th, 2024 – Coinscribble by CoinboundBitMind is excited to announce the official launch of the BitMind Subnet, a new addition to the Bittensor ecosystem dedicated to the detection and mitigation of deepfakes.

With the spread of generative artificial intelligence (AI) posing severe challenges to privacy, security, and information integrity, the BitMind Subnet aims to improve digital trust.

The BitMind Subnet is a decentralized deepfake detection system that employs sophisticated AI models to accurately distinguish between real and synthetic content. It features transparent, public results and an open-source subnet architecture. The subnet’s detection capabilities can be leveraged directly through APIs, allowing for easy integration into consumer use cases, such as web applications and browser extensions, including the BitMind Detection App and the Agent Smith Browser Extension. This enhances the security of digital media and protects the essential trust in digital interactions.

“The launch of the BitMind Subnet marks a significant step forward in our fight against deepfakes” said Ken Miyachi, Co-Founder and CEO at Bitmind. “By leveraging sophisticated AI models and a Bittensor’s decentralized architecture, we are empowering users to detect and mitigate the impact of synthetic media effectively.”

Core Features of the Subnet

The BitMind Subnet features miners operating advanced detection algorithms to differentiate between genuine and AI-generated images. For benchmarking purposes, a foundation model using the recent Neighborhood Pixel Relationships method for deepfake detection (published in CVPR 2024) is deployed to promote competitive detection accuracy. Validators evaluate miners’ model inferences on both real and synthetic image inputs after a randomized image transformation process to ensure miners’ performance is measured with diverse media sources.

Community collaboration is a cornerstone of the BitMind Subnet. A tokenized incentive system rewards contributions and encourages resource sharing in the subnet, with a public leaderboard updated live. The community is actively encouraged to contribute to the evolving codebase, and by engaging with developers and researchers, the subnet is continuously improved and updated with the latest advancements in AI.

Consumer Applications Using the Subnet

The BitMind Subnet enables powerful consumer applications leveraging its deepfake detection outputs. The BitMind Detection App features an image upload interface that helps users quickly identify the likelihood that a picture is real or fake. This anti-deception tool is powered by proxies running on BitMind subnet validator neurons, ensuring decentralized, collaborative technology.

The BitMind Agent Smith browser extension examines webpage images in real-time, querying subnet validators and producing real versus fake verification overlays on visible media. This extension allows users to regain confidence and security in online interactions in the era of AI-generated media.

How to Start Contributing to the Subnet

Developers can get started with mining or validating in minutes by following the subnet codebase’s readme. BitMind also provides walkthroughs covering the entire onboarding process, from compute acquisition to subnet installation, miner training, miner and validator registration, and deployments to the mainnet.
